Genital or Venereal Warts technical term condylomata acuminatum are a troubling and depressing problem for both men and women. They are caused by the same virus, HPV (Human Papilloma Virus), that causes warts throughout the body.

HPV is one of the most common causes of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in this country. It is estimated that as many as 40 million Americans are infected with HPV in the genital tract, and the incidence of this disease appears to be increasing.

Of the more than 100 types of HPV identified, there are more than 30 types that have the ability to infect the genitals. These genital warts can be passed from one person to another through unprotected sexual intercourse.

Genital warts are frequently mistaken as a more serious sexually transmitted disease (STD) and the resulting anger and confusion frequently causes severe anxiety and emotional trauma to sufferers and their sexual partners and family.

Although caused by the HPV virus, external genital warts can be highly contagious and spread rapidly around the thighs, genitals and anus. Immediate steps must be taken to destroy the virus before it grows and replicates.

Genital HPV may cause warts to appear on or around the genitals and anus of both men and women. Genital warts often occur in groups and can be very tiny or can accumulate into large masses on genital tissues. Left untreated, genital warts may eventually develop a fleshy, cauliflower-like appearance

Venereal warts are most commonly caused by HPV types 6 and 11. Malignancy is strongly associated with types 16, 18, 31, and 33. Transmission is both sexual and non-sexual. The lesions are filiform or sessile shaped. They are soft, skin-colored sometimes pink, red, or brown macules, papules, or plaques. These can be pinpoint or apple size. The warts can be alone, in grape-like clusters, or form a cauliflower-like mass. The most frequent sites are the anus area and external genitalia for both men and women. However, infection of the urethra or vagina can occur. Treatment should start right away, after a determining that you have genital warts. You should also maintain protected sex or abstinence while being treated. You should also consider protected sex after treatment as you can transmit the virus unknowingly to partners even after removing the warts, although it is less likely.

Traditional Methods for Treating Genital and Venereal Warts

As mentioned previously, warts on the genital area aren't treated exactly like warts on other parts of the skin. The following are some ways to treat warts on the genitals:

  • Applying liquid nitrogen -- Warts on the genitals may be frozen with liquid nitrogen (cryotherapy). With liquid nitrogen treatment, the doctor applies the liquid nitrogen at a number of different office visits until the warts are completely gone. One can imagine the pain involved with this treatment.
  • Applying podophyllin -- Warts on the genitals may be treated weekly with podophyllin by your doctor. You may also put a medicine called podofilox (brand name: Condylox or Aldera) on the warts. The effectiveness of these treatments is roughly 55%.
  • Loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) -- With this method for removing genital warts, the doctor passes a sharp instrument shaped like a loop underneath the wart, cutting the wart out of the skin.
  • CO2 laser surgery -- For large warts in the genital area, laser surgery may be needed for complete removal.
  • Interferon injections --If genital warts don't go away after they've been treated with different methods, your doctor may try an interferon injection into the warts. Interferon is a chemical that our bodies make. It helps our immune system fight infection. An injection of interferon into the wart may help your body's immune system fight the virus that is causing the wart. Generally, interferon is injected into warts twice a week for up to 8 weeks, or until the warts are gone. This is a VERY expensive procedure with each injection running upwards of $200.00 per treatment. The effectiveness of this procedure is also about 50%.
What is Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) relative to Genital Warts?

HPV is commonly known as the "wart virus", although there are more than 70 different types of HPV. It is a microscopic virus particle that infects the skin. HPV is one of the most common infections in the world, infecting approximately 40% of all humans.

Genital HPV is not necessarily genital warts. The 30 strains that infect the genital area are divided into 2 subcategories: Genital Warts and Cervical Dysplasia.

Genital warts may look something like skin tags - they are not always obvious warts. In fact, sometimes they may be so tiny that a doctor has to use a magnifying glass to see them. They only grow to large sizes if they are left untreated. Genital warts do not lead to cancer.

Cervical dysplasia is the fancy term for an abnormal pap smear. Cervical dysplasia is not warts. Rather, it is when the cells in the cervix undergo abnormal changes that may lead to cancer. Cervical dysplasia only becomes cancer after it has been left untreated for some period of time.

The reason that a doctor will give you a pap test every year is to see whether or not you have a dysplasia-causing HPV strain in your body. If you get regular paps, you can reduce your risk for cancer, because the doctor will treat any abnormal cells before they can progress.

Having genital warts does not mean you will get cervical cancer, as having an abnormal pap smear does not mean you will get warts. If you only have one strain, you will only get one thing - warts OR dysplasia. This holds true EXCEPT for strain 16, which normally causes dysplasia, but can also cause “condyloma planum,” or flat warts (according to ARHP). Note, however, that these are not the normal raised warts that the wart strains cause. The only way you could get both warts and dysplasia is if you had more than one kind of HPV, or if you had strain 16.

You get HPV from having sex with an infected partner. Some people use condoms and still get the virus, so condoms are not entirely reliable when it comes to HPV. HPV is common - because most people never show symptoms, many people are infected without realizing they have it. Experts think that only about 1-2% of the people with wart-causing HPV and 3-5% of the people with dysplasia-causing HPV ever get diagnosed.

In the case of HPV, the infection is actually localized directly to the infected point in the skin, as opposed to the herpes simplex virus. Unlike HPV, the herpes virus goes through the skin and into the nerve cells, traveling up the nerve cell connection to the nerve ganglia by the spinal cord, where the virus lives. With HPV, the infection is actually in the skin.

Although there are many types of HPV it is commonly associated with genital warts or otherwise termed venereal warts.

HPV is contagious and transmitted through contact by an infected piece of skin with a non-infected piece of skin. The presumption is that the non-infected area has to have a small, perhaps microscopic break that allows a tiny amount of tissue from the infected HPV area to get into the non-infected area, allowing an infection to set up.

Therefore, if a person with a wart anywhere on that person’s body were to place that area in contact with the genitalia of the other person, this could cause the virus to be transmitted to the genital area of the partner.

Keith N., Everett, WA.

Hi: I have suffered from genital warts since I was in college (for 5 years now). It was very embarrassing and had made me very self conscious about my condition. So much so I couldn't even date anyone because of it. After trying medication prescribed by my doctor (and it not working) and spending over $1000 on treatments of these last 5 years. I finally found a solution that worked for me in your dermisil for warts product. I have to say it is quite potent, and it worked for me.

Thank you! Keith N., Everett, WA.

What is Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)?

HPV, commonly known as the "wart virus", is a microscopic virus particle that infects the skin. HPV is one of the most common infections in the world, infecting approximately 40% of all humans.

HPV is contagious and transmitted through contact by an infected piece of skin with a non-infected piece of skin. The presumption is that the non-infected area has to have a small, perhaps microscopic, break that allows a tiny amount of tissue from the infected HPV area to get into the non-infected area, allowing an infection to set up.

Therefore, if a person with a wart anywhere on that person’s body were to place that area in contact with the genitalia of the other person, this could cause the wart virus to be transmitted to the genital area of the partner. This applies to warts on fingers as well as warts on the genitals of the infected partner.

Different types of HPVs cause different types of warts that may grow on various parts of the body such as hands and feet or around the mouth and genital area. Warts appear as single bumps or in clusters, some having a cauliflower structure.
